Candle Cove Wiki

Poppy is the captain of the Laughingstock crew, and the brother of Milo. He is known to be one of the few honourable pirates in Candle Cove.

Appearance

He is an archetypal pirate marionette, sporting a red beard and moustache, eye patch, and peg leg. He is armed to the teeth with pistols, daggers, and a sword. His coat is described as being either blue or green, and he wears a tricorn hat with a polka-dot bandana underneath. Poppy's movements are said to be the most life-like of the puppets in the show.

Personality

Poppy is courageous with a strong sense of adventure, and is best friends with Janice. Although he often acts like a gentleman towards women, he is harsh towards Percy, whom he considers a coward. He is quick-tempered, sometimes to the extreme, and often lets his anger get the better of him.

He is the Skin-Taker's arch-rival, and has a deep burning hatred towards his nemesis. Unlike the rest of the crew, he is not afraid of the Skin-Taker, and is the first to take him head-on in a sword fight. He is willing to do anything to protect Janice from the Skin-Taker, with his ultimate goal being forcing the Skin-Taker back to the Abyssal Kingdom.

Notable Episodes

  • In the pilot episode, "Welcome to Our Happy Ship", Janice arrives in Candle Cove and is stranded in the ocean. Percy pulls her on board, and Poppy welcomes her to the Laughingstock, which he remarks is the best pirate ship in the world. He claims that he is her friend and only wants to help her. Suddenly, the Rubber Fishes crew appears and demands the Laughingstock crew give them Janice. The two pirate crews fight, and Janice manages to sink the Rubber Fishes' ship when she fires a cannon at them.
  • In "Percy Plays Piano", Poppy is irritated by Percy playing a song badly on the piano. He yells at Percy to stop, but he responds that he is only trying to get the crew into "the right spirit", causing Poppy to give up. Later on, the Laughingstock crew get into another fight with the Rubber Fishes, and Percy manages to drive them off with his off-key piano playing. The crew gives Percy a new piano as a present, but Poppy intended for him to learn "how to play it even worse".
  • In "Getting Under My Skin", the Laughingstock crew see a green flash on the horizon, leading them to believe the Skin-Taker has been summoned into Candle Cove. They follow the flash to a dark cave, where the Skin-Taker is waiting for them. Although Poppy attacks the Skin-Taker, he manages to escape unharmed.
  • In "The Battle of Little Bedford", the Laughingstock crew follow the Skin-Taker back to his hideout on Little Bedford. When Poppy brandishes his sword, the Skin-Taker taunts him that he should use his sword on Janice, as her skin would be perfect to fix a hole in his top hat. Angered, Poppy leaps up and plunges his sword into the ground, creating a crack wide enough that the Skin-Taker falls underground. Poppy almost falls in as well, but Janice reaches in and pulls him out. Poppy thanks her warmly, promising to never let the Skin-Taker hurt her.
  • In "The New Ship", Poppy is angered at the Skin-Taker. He refuses to speak about why to Janice, so Percy reveals the truth to her. Years ago Poppy, wearing a mask, tied the Skin-Taker to a chair and removed his skin, to avenge all those who had been skinned and killed by him. He becomes enraged at Percy, but Janice sticks up for Percy and tells Poppy he is no better than the Skin-Taker. Hurt by her comments, Poppy leaves to be by himself and ponder his past actions. At one point, some Coral Reefers start chewing on his arm, and Poppy crushes them causing them to scream. This makes Poppy have flashbacks of the Skin-Taker begging him to stop. This is too much for Poppy, who leaves the area and begins to sob. He later apologizes to Janice and asks her to forgive him, but she does not give an answer.
  • In "A Hole in the Ship", the Rubber Fishes shoot a hole in the Laughingstock, forcing it to land on a deserted island. A marooned pirate named Salty Jojo offers to repair their ship. However, the Rubber Fishes have followed them and stole Jojo's carpentry tools. Poppy and Calvery distract the Rubber Fishes while Percy and Janice sneak on board the Crackerjack. They manage to retrieve the tools, and Salty Jojo joins the Laughingstock crew after repairing their ship.
  • In "Milo", the Laughingstock crew is approached by Poppy's brother Milo and the Jolly Hounds crew after they were attacked by the NPHC. Poppy aids Milo in defeating the NPHC, so Milo decides to stay with the Laughingstock crew.
  • In "The Clip Show", the Laughingstock crew reminisce about their favourite memories since Janice arrived in Candle Cove. Poppy says that his favourite memory is defeating the Skin-Taker in Little Bedford.
  • In "Christmas in Candle Cove", the Laughingstock crew celebrate Christmas on Snowflake Island. The crew wonder where Milo is, as he has not joined them. When Poppy opens a present, he instantly recognizes Milo's hair inside the box. Included is a note from the Skin-Taker, informing him of his brother's treachery. Poppy begins to scream and cry at this revelation. The Snowlems try to comfort Poppy by giving him presents, but nothing seems to work. To prevent Janice from finding out what happened, Poppy asks them to take Janice away to play in the snow.

Trivia

  • It is unknown what happened to Poppy after "Christmas in Candle Cove", as he is not seen again after learning of Milo's death.
  • He is extremely greedy and loves to gamble, and hi-jinks always follow him because of those two flaws. He frequently gambles at the Salty Sea.
  • His first voice actor Jack Gannon quit for unknown reasons, before the second season began. Poppy was then voiced by Roger Banks, who had a thick Irish accent.
